11 Authentic Greek Islands You Must Visit This Summer

No visit to Greece can be considered complete without visiting at least a few of the country’s incredible islands!

From non-stop nightlife and charming villages, to rock formations created by centuries of volcanic activities and ancient ruins steeped in culture, and even the location where one man foresaw the end of the World, the Greek islands offer experiences unlike anything you’ll find on the mainland.

With over 200 inhabited islands, choosing which one to visit can make planning your trip a little daunting. To help you plan your island hopping adventure through Greece, we’ve listed some of our top favourite islands. You’ll find all sorts, from the party hubs to the peace oasis!

Let’s get started.

Aegina

Located in the Saronic Gulf, Aegina is a gorgeous Greek island with close proximity to Athens. This makes it a very convenient getaway from the busy capital, offering a unique blend of ancient archaeological sites, nature and delicious pistachios (for which the island is actually known for!).

Due to its proximity to Athens, the island is mostly visited by locals. Because of this, Aegina is also a much cheaper destination when compared to other islands on this list, given that it has managed to preserve its traditional character and way of life. Here you will be able to experience Greek island culture firsthand, witness local customs and festivals, while interacting with friendly locals.

If you can’t wait to dive into the beautiful Greek waters, Aegina has you covered with a variety of beautiful beaches! Some of the most popular ones that we recommend you visit are Marathonas and Agia Marina

This island offers plenty of activities for all types of travellers, making it a great destination for families and adventurers alike!

Hydra

Hydra is a very special island in the Saronic Gulf. For one, there are no vehicles of any kind allowed on the island. And not just motorised vehicles, even bikes and mopeds are banned!

This, along with it’s small population, makes it the perfect place to relax and unwind. Walk through  the narrow alleys of the main town and admire the incredible preserved architecture, or visit the many art galleries that dot the streets. And if you’re craving adventure, why not head for one the island’s many hiking trails!

Hydra’s unspoiled nature is just waiting to be explored, and the many hidden beaches are a wonderful escape from the hot and dusty paths.

This small island has it all. If you’re looking to escape back in time and immerse yourself in some peace and quiet, then you can’t miss Hydra.

Koufonisia

Koufonisia is a hidden gem located in the Cyclades Archipelago, consisting of two main islands and several uninhabited islets.

Secluded and peaceful, Koufonisia has managed to preserve itself from the mass tourism that has plagued so many of the Greek islands. Here you’ll find some of the most beautiful and pristine sandy beaches in the country, all easily accessible and great for spending a day relaxing and tanning on the sand.

Of all the beaches on the island, be sure to visit Fanos and Pori. They are our favourites, and we cannot recommend them enough.

If you’re looking for a beach vacation, and an excellent base for island hopping in Greece, you should absolutely add Koufonisia to your bucket list!

Milos

One of the most famous destinations on our list, Milos is another gem of the Cyclades.

The unique geography of the island is shaped by millennia of violent geological activity, something that can be seen by the myriad of caves, hot springs and volcanic rock formations that were left behind. Not to worry however, the volcano on the island last erupted 90.000 years ago and has been dormant since.

The most striking part of the island’s landscape has to be Sarakiniko Beach. The white stone formations are absolutely spectacular, and give the impression of an otherworldly, almost alien location. It is a truly unique experience, unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.

When you’re done exploring, why not head to Plaka, the island’s main town. There you’ll wander in between the white and blue buildings that offer plenty of photo opportunities, and enjoy some delicious food served by the incredibly friendly locals!

Kimolos

Kimolos is another tiny island located in, you guessed it, the Cyclades. Located an hour away from Milos by ferry, Kimolos offers an authentic local experience, and is in no way less breathtaking than it’s larger sister.

So, why should you take time out of your day to visit this island?

Unlike Milos, Kimolos is a much quieter and less known location, with a much more laid back vibe. It’s a great place to escape if Milos gets too busy and you can’t stand the crowds. Like a serene retreat, this island is the perfect mix of character and tranquillity. There are also plenty of wild trails for those looking for adventure!

Sifnos

If you are looking for an island where you can really experience Greek food at its finest, Sifnos is for you! While not particularly well known for its beaches, Sifnos is renowned for its incredible cuisine, and is a paradise for food lovers.

Local specialities you absolutely must-try include:

  • Revithada: A delicious slow-cooked chickpea stew;

  • Mastelo: An oven slow-cooked lamb;

  • Revithokeftedes (that’s a mouthful): Incredible chickpea fritters that are usually served with greek yogurt.

Sifnos is in no way a party island, and there really isn’t much to do or see, apart from wandering around and being in nature. You’ll go there to enjoy the peace and quiet, and to stuff yourself with delicious food!

Symi

This tiny island is famous for its colourful, unique waterfront houses that attract thousands of tourists every year. Interestingly, while still within Greek waters, Symi is located just off the coast of Türkiye (Turkey), and the country’s coastline is visible from the island.

For such a small island, there sure is a lot to do and see; There are plenty of beaches, some of which are only reachable via boat, for a small fee. The ruins of a castle overlook the main port of Yialos, around which you’ll find plenty of delicious local restaurants, along with several museums.

For the more active folks among you, several hiking trails can be found cutting through the natural landscape of the island, and are a blast to explore!

Paros

If you want the classic Greek post card experience, and intend on partying until dawn, then you should definitely consider checking out Paros!

To give you an idea, Paros is the low budget alternative to tourist giants such as Mykonos and Santorini. You’ll get the same insta-friendly vibes and settings, but with smaller crowds and, more importantly, more money in your pocket at the end of the day. Hundreds of bars and clubs come alive after dark, and you’ll get plenty of opportunities to socialise and meet other travellers.

Along with a vibrant party scene, Paros offers some of the most stunning beaches in Greece, and opportunities for water sports are abundant.

If that wasn’t enough, Paros is full of traditional crafts shops, along with trendy restaurants and modern cafés that you will want to check out when you visit!

Naxos

Naxos is the introvert brother of Paros.

The two islands are situated one next to the other, and couldn’t be more different. While Paros is known for its over-the-top party scene, Naxos is famous for its laid back vibes, and beautiful natural landscapes.

You will still find the modern commodities typical of more tourist-oriented Greek islands, but with a local touch that is absent from most other similar locations. Locals were always ready to lend a hand or answer our questions, and we always felt treated not like tourists, but welcomed guests.

Naxos offers, in our opinion, the most variety out of any island we’ve visited in Greece. Adventurous hikes to the top of Mount Zas, water sports by the beautiful beaches, immersive ancient ruins and museums full of relics from the island’s past and charming villages, Naxos has it all!

Amorgos

Unlike the other islands on this list, chances are you’ve never even heard of Amorgos. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting however, as Amorgos is one of the most authentic and memorable places on this list!

Known for its stunning rocky beaches, and the massive cliff that overlooks the main town and port, Amorgos is an island that remains so far untouched by mass tourism. Keep in mind, however, that it is large, and therefore more easily explored by car.

This unspoiled gem makes for a memorable and relaxing vacation, and is ideal for those looking for the traditional Greek island life, with spectacular nature as a backdrop.

Patmos

Out of all the islands we’ve visited, Patmos has perhaps the most spiritual significance.

Known as the Island of the Apocalypse, it is believed to be the location were the apostle John received visions of the end of the World, and recorded them in the Book of Revelations. Wether you are a believer or not, there is no denying that this story makes visiting Patmos a fascinating experience.

The island is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sights; Along with the Cave of the Apocalypse and the historic town centre, you will also be able to visit an ancient monastery tied to St. John. The museum housed within is a must-see, and holds an incredible collection of artefacts, manuscripts and other items of religious importance.

Patmos is an incredible place to immerse yourself in the amazing history that shaped the island. Of course, after sightseeing you’ll want to head for one of the many beaches and take a swim in the crystal-clear waters!
