What makes a backpack waterproof?

A backpack can be considered waterproof when there is no space for water to pass from the outside to the inside of the bag. Water can infiltrate through the seams, the zippers and through the fabric, so the more these are waterproofed the more the bag will resist against water.

Here is what you should be on the lookout for:

• Zippers

  Waterproof zippers are easy to recognise, as they are large, thick and seal completely when closed. They are also usually quite stiff and hard to open and close, especially if the bag is new. 

• Fabric

Waterproof backpack fabrics are usually made of materials such as TPU or PVC. These are easy to spot, as the fabric will be thick and rigid, and have a plasticky shine to it. 

• Seams

A waterproof backpack will have tapered seams, in which a nylon tape is glued over the seam to keep water out. Alternatively, you may see backpacks where the seams are sealed and fused together instead of just sewn.  

What are the pros and cons of a waterproof backpack?

You might be wondering, if it’s so easy to make a bag waterproof then why isn’t everyone doing?

That’s because, while superior in some aspects, waterproof backpacks have some considerable disadvantages when compared to regular bags that limit their use to specific situations and environments.

Pros:

• Water resistance: The obvious advantage of a waterproof backpack is that, well, it’s waterproof. You won’t have to worry about your gear getting wet and damaged, no matter where you are.

• Durability: The extra thick fabrics of waterproof bags mean that they are often much more durable and resistant to wear-and-tear than regular backpacks. 

• Versatility: Because they are more resistant to water and wear-and-tear, waterproof bags are much more versatile than regular backpacks. Whether you’re hiking, going on a boat or just strolling through town, you’ll be able to do it without having to switch to another bag.

Cons:

• More expensive: Waterproof backpacks tend to be more expensive, due to the higher cost of production and materials involved. The higher the level of water resistance, the more expensive the bag tends to be.

• Heavier weight: Because of the thick fabric and plastic, waterproof bags are often much heavier than a pack with a comparable size. While for many this won’t be an issue, ultralight travellers and hikers will definitely notice the difference.

• Less flexibility: Because the fabric of a waterproof bag is thicker and less flexible, it will stretch less and make it a little more difficult to fill your bag to the max.

• Condensation: Because of the lack of airflow, especially during the summer or in tropical climates, trapped humidity in your bag can lead to condensation forming on the inside. You’ll have to make sure you dry and clean your bag regularly to ensure the interior doesn’t get mouldy.

The YETI Panga 28 is a backpack for every occasion. Not only does it look super stylish, it is also completely waterproof and amazingly durable. It weighs a ton and costs a small fortune, but it’s money well spent for a seriously impressive bag. 

Equipped with an extremely durable laminated nylon TPU fabric, fully waterproof zippers and sealed seams, the Panga 28L can even be fully submersed in water. This makes it an ideal choice for water sports enthusiasts, travellers and hikers.

In terms of storage the Panga offers a generous 28 liters that allows plenty of space to store your hiking gear, enough clothes for at least a few days or simply what you need for your day to day activities. It only has one main compartment that is divided in two by a spacer, leaving enough room for a 15” device, and an internal zippered mesh pocket for storing smaller items such as chargers and keys.

On the front, a series of nylon loops on the front of the pack allow you to customise the pack to secure more gear on the exterior, either by crossing bungie cords through the loops or by using carabineers. The loops can also be used to add an optional water bottle holder. 

The Panga is very comfortable to carry around, although you’ll likely start noticing the weight after a few hours on the road if the pack is heavily loaded. The shoulder straps are well padded and offer a good level of support, and the foam back panel is relatively breathable even in hot conditions.

For extra support, the Panga is equipped with a nylon belt to distribute the weight more evenly and make the pack more comfortable to carry.

The Mountain Hardwear Simcoe 28 is a very lightweight, fully waterproof backpack designed with travelling and day-hiking in mind, as well as for daily commuting. It might not have the most exciting look, but behind the simple exterior is an extremely well designed pack. 

What first stands out about the Simcoe is the weight; at only 854g, it is incredibly light for a waterproof backpack. This is due to the thin ripstop fabric, which means this pack will be more flexible but a little less durable.

The lighter fabric doesn’t mean, however, that it’s any less waterproof; the Simcoe is equipped with a TPU coating, covered zippers and fully taped seams, which allow it to resist even heavy rain for prolonged periods of time. The zippers are not entirely waterproof though, which means the pack is not submersible. 

In terms of storage, the Simcoe’s 28 liter volume is more than enough for travelling, excursions and hikes. The roomy main compartment has two additional zippered pockets for extra storage, one of which has a handy key clip.

In addition, the pack comes with a removable laptop sleeve that can simultaneously fit a 15” laptop and a tablet. On the exterior, there is a pocket located on the top of the bag, as well as a hidden water bottle stash pocket on the side. The side pocket is also useful to hide small valuables, as it is pretty difficult to spot if you don’t know it’s there.

Due to the low weight, the Simcoe is a comfortable backpack to carry over long distances. The ergonomic shoulder straps and the well ventilated back panel add to the comfort, and allow this pack to be used even in hot weather conditions.

Osprey hit out of the park this year with the release of their new Archeon series. The 24 liter model is the most versatile out of the three available sizes, and features a fully waterproof design, ultra-tough materials and practical storage. 

The Osprey Archeon 24 is fully waterproof, although not submersible, and is made of an durable waterproof ballistic polyester with a DWR finish. The fabric is extremely wear-and-tear resistant, allowing you to easily use this pack for intensive trekking and travelling without any fear of damaging it. The extreme durability, however, comes at the expense of the backpack being very rigid and a little heavy.

The Archeon’s main compartment features a full clamshell design for easy packing and extra pockets to store additional items, while the velcro-secured laptop compartment can fit a 16” device. While the laptop compartment is not separate, it can be accessed via its own zipper without having to open the bag completely.

An additional pocket on the top of the bag provides additional storage, while two adjustable nylon straps on the front of the pack allow you to hang a jacket, or attach additional pouches from the Archeon series. 

One detail to keep in mind is that, unlike the larger models, the 24l version lacks a bottle holder; it’s not a deal-breaker, but it is a slight hassle to have to open the main compartment to grab your bottle while on the move. If this bothers you and you don’t mind having a larger bag, then the Archeon 30L might be the preferable choice.

One thing this smaller model doesn’t skimp on, however, is comfort; it’s an extremely well designed pack, with ergonomic shoulder straps and a breathable back panel. A large waist belt helps distribute the weight of the pack more evenly, and can be stashed away when not needed.

The Archeon even has load lifters on the shoulder straps for additional weight management, putting it on par with a trekking backpack in terms of ergonomics and functionality!

If extreme durability and carrying comfort is what you’re looking for, then the Archeon 24l is one of the best choices available. It might be a tad overbuilt for every day carry, but the incredible build and superior water resistance make it suitable for pretty much any terrain and activity.

Exped Typhoon 25

The Exped Typhoon 25 backpack is the lightest on our list, and is a great choice to use as a daypack for adventurous travellers or for light hikes. It may not be as wear-resistant as other models, but the incredible weight and water resistance make it a must-have on the road, whether urban or wild.

The Typhoon’s rolltop design and tapered seams ensure a superior resistance against water on any occasion, although the pack is not rated for submersion. When it comes to durability, the ripstop nylon fabric is tough but thin, a compromise for the pack’s weight. This also affects the maximum carry load, which for the Typhoon is around 11 lb (5kg). 

The bag offers 25 liters of storage in a single rolltop compartment, with an additional zippered pocket on the inside. The Typhoon does not have a dedicated laptop compartment, but we managed to snugly fit a 15” device inside. Additional lashing points on the outside allow you to attach carabineers or bungie cords, while two mesh elastic bottle holders provide additional storage for small items you might need on the go. 

Being so light, the Exped Typhoon 25 is a comfortable pack to carry.

The straps are reasonably well padded, while the back panel is thin and breathable. It’s not the most ergonomic backpack, but with its weight and how much you can carry in it really doesn’t need to be.

If you’re looking for a lightweight, waterproof pack to carry on your excursions by boat, day-hikes through the forest or simply for commuting to work, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Exped Typhoon 25. The lower durability and low maximum carry weight limit its use a travel backpack, but it really excels for EDC and outdoor use!

For travellers and hikers looking for the final word on waterproof backpacks, look not further than the Patagonia Guidewater 29L. This impressively built backpack features 100% recycled, ultra-tough fabric and a completely waterproof design, in addition to being made in Fair Trade Certified factories.

The Guidewater 29l’s nylon fabric with PU coating is incredibly wear-and-tear resistant, and be will perfectly at home in the outdoors. The bag is also completely submersible thanks to waterproof zippers and sealed seams, so you definitely won’t have to worry about getting caught out in the rain. Impressively, despite all these features, Patagonia has even somehow managed to keep the weight of the Guidewater 29L at under at just over 2 lb (960g).

The bag only features one large compartment for storage, with a divider and a removable organiser. The organiser can be secured to the lashing on the front of the pack to allow you to access small items while on the move without having to open the main compartment. Also, while not a laptop bag, the Guidewater 29L can fit a 15” device. Unfortunately, the bag lacks any additional pockets or storage for water bottles. 

When it comes to the overall carrying comfort, the Patagonia Guidewater 29l is extremely well made; the large moulded straps efficiently distribute weight, and the pack panel remains breathable in most weather conditions. The bag’s relatively low weight also comes in useful when carrying a fully loaded pack.

The Osprey Transporter Duffel 40L is an extremely durable, 100% waterproof bag for travellers and water sports enthusiasts. It’s not a backpack in the traditional sense, and you definitely won’t be hiking or going to work with this on your back, but you can be sure it will survive all your travels without a scratch. 

The transporter’s ultra-thick and ultra-durable fabric are beyond tough, and you won’t have any issue carrying this bag over rough terrain. It’s also TPU coated, with sealed seams and zippers that provide an airtight closing for maximum water resistance and submersion.

The Transporter’s main compartment is spacious but lacks any dividers or pockets, so packing cubes are a must-have if you want to be able to find your items quickly.  There are also no additional pockets on the outside of the bag. 

In terms of comfort this is not a typical backpack, and it won’t be as easy to carry over long distances. While the straps are well padded, the back lacks structure and breathability.

All in all, this is not a bag made for long walks or EDC. It’s made for being on the road, and making sure your gear remains safe and dry every step of the way; and that, it does extremely well. For more adventurous activities such as motorcycle trips, travelling by boat and scuba diving, the Osprey Transporter Duffel 40l is as good as it gets.
