The 5 Best Viewpoints in Lisbon, Portugal

Being built on seven hills, Lisbon has plenty of amazing viewpoints (or miradouros in Portuguese) dotted around the city, just waiting to be explored!

Going up and down to and from the viewpoints can be very tiring and time consuming, so we picked out the five best miradouros you cannot miss when visiting Lisbon!

Use this map that we created as reference, with the locations of each of the viewpoints we recommend.

São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint

Located in one of the most popular areas of Lisbon, in the neighbourhood of Baixa (also a must-visit!), the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint is situated in a small garden that goes by the same name.

From here you can enjoy a great view that stretches all the way to São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river, with the Old City in between!

While enjoying this beautiful sight, you can sit back on one of the many benches, relax in the shade of the trees and enjoy the lively atmosphere as the inhabitants of Lisbon go about their lives around you!

Portas do Sol Viewpoint

This beautiful viewpoint is located at the top of the classic Alfama neighbourhood, on the way to São Jorge Castle.

This miradouro is very large, giving you a wide view of the entire neighbourhood below as well as the Tagus River, despite the crowds you’ll usually find there!

During the summer there is an even more pleasant atmosphere, with live music performances and evening terraces! There are several Portuguese cafés and taverns around this viewpoint but, because it is a touristy area, we found the prices to be unnecessarily high. We usually just stop there to have a coffee, and go somewhere else to eat.

You might like to know that..

Just a few minutes away from Portas do Sol is another viewpoint, Santa Luzia. It is known for its beautiful tiles but is very small. It gets extremely crowded super fast, which makes it sometimes impossible to enjoy the view. For this reason it didn’t make the list, but it’s worth checking out if you have the time. Perhaps you’ll have better luck than us!

Pro-Tip:

This is a starting point for several tuk-tuk’s that do tours of the city, and the drivers can be a little pushy with tourists. There are often street vendors that target foreigners and can be a little difficult to shake off. A simple “Não, obrigado” (“no, thank you”) or just ignoring them should do the trick.

This park is a hidden gem in the Santo António neighbourhood.

Despite its small size, it is one of our favourites because of the relaxing atmosphere, impeccable maintenance of the park and the great view it offers of the city!

It is easily accessible and in walking distance from the famous Praça do Rossio. Despite that, it remains relatively unknown by tourists and is usually very calm.

It is a must-visit for a relaxing afternoon in Lisbon or in the evening just in time for the sunset!

Graça Viewpoint

Also known as Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen viewpoint, this miradouro is located in the old and traditional Graça neighbourhood and offers our favourite view of the castle!

It is a popular place for photographers, as its distance from the city centre means that many more landmarks and parts of Lisbon become visible. The most famous of these is the iconic 25 de Abril bridge, the connection between Lisbon and Almada.

If you decide to visit this miradouro, don’t forget to check out the church and convent behind the viewpoint, as they are worth visiting! They were founded in 1271 and rebuilt after the 1755 Earthquake.

You might like to know that..

The sunsets are amazing from this viewpoint and the nearby café offers great food and drinks, even if they are a little pricy. As of the time of writing this they do not accept card payments, so make sure to bring some cash!

Senhora do Monte Viewpoint

Senhora do Monte, named after the small chapel situated on the hill, is located just 10 minutes away from the Graça Viewpoint and is the highest miradouro in Lisbon!

Because of its position, it offers what is arguably the best view of the city. With its 250° panoramic view, you can see almost the entirety of Lisbon all the way to the Tagus River.

Over the years it has become one of the most popular miradouros of the city, so it can get a bit crowded during the high season. Nevertheless you should not miss out on the opportunity to admire such an extensive view of Lisbon!

You might like to know that..

There is a 10 minute walk uphill from the nearest public transport stop. This is especially important for people with reduced mobility. You can drive up all the way, but finding a parking spot can be very difficult.

Lisbon is one the locations we visited with the largest number of beautiful viewpoints.

Visiting them can sometimes be tiring because of the steep climbs, but once you reach the top you will see that it was absolutely worth it!

There are many more miradouros worth visiting that simply didn’t make our list, but we encourage you to explore them anyway. Which one is your favourite?
