Located in walking distance from Pico do Arieiro, Madeira’s third tallest peak, the Mountain Eco Shelters are a peaceful oasis in the middle of the wilderness.

These wooden cabins were conceived to offer an “off-the-grid” experience for visitors looking to escape the hustle of everyday life. The shelters are very isolated, despite being only a 20 minute drive away from Funchal, Madeira’s capital.

To add to the immersion, Wi-Fi is only available at the reception and there is no TV provided in the cabins.

Keep in mind that for longer stays you’ll definitely need a car to reach the closest grocery store. Free parking, however, is available! Alternatively, there is a snack bar located only a 5 minute walk away from the cabins.

With so many hiking trails available nearby, this accommodation really calls to nature lovers and adventurous trekkers. Along with walking routes, you’ll also find paths for mountain biking and canyoning!

That is not to say, however, that you won’t find anything to do around here; Hiking, cave exploring and swimming in the natural pools are just a few of the activities available in the area.

One walking route you should absolutely try when staying at Granny’s Farm is the Levada Fajã do Rodrigues. Expect a pretty wild hike passing through lush vegetation and under stunning waterfalls, so don’t forget to bring some waterproof clothing!

We definitely recommend this place for all outdoor enthusiasts, and families in particular will surely have a blast when staying here.
