Elegear Double Sleeping Pad Review

When out in the Great Outdoors, it sure is nice to have something comfortable to lie on at the end of a busy day spent in nature.

Thatโ€™s why our ideal sleeping pad needs to be comfortable, durable and easy to inflate.

As avid travelers and outdoor lovers, we know the importance of a good night's rest under the stars, and that is why we put this double sleeping pad to the test, to see if it fit our comfort and convenience needs for our future wilderness adventures.

Recently, we were approached by the folks over at Elegear, who asked us to review their Double Sleeping Pad. So, letโ€™s see if it delivers on its promise of an unmatched good nightโ€™s sleep.

Letโ€™s get started!

# Design and Features

The Elegear Double Sleeping Pad is a large, two person inflatable mattress that measures 79โ€ in lenght x 55โ€ in width, and is 4โ€ thick (2 meters in lenght x 1.4 meters in width, and is 10 centimeters thick).

Out of the box, it feels rugged and well built, and the thick TPU and nylon fabric looks like itโ€™s ready for the outdoors. At 5lb or 2.2kg, itโ€™s definitely not in the ultralight category, but still a reasonable weight when accounting for the size. โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

Its main feature is a built-in foot pump, which Elegear states is capable of fully inflating the mattress in under 3 minutes.

We were curious to put this claim to the test, and decided to time how long it would take us to get the pad ready to use. We were expecting it to perform well but, surprisingly, the foot pump not only beat our expectations, it even surpassed what Elegear claimed:

  • Without rushing, and without much effort at all, we managed to fully inflate the Double Sleeping Pad in just over 2 minutes, a minute less than what the brand stated.

  • However, if you so wish, it is absolutely possible to inflate this pad by using a standard electric or manual air pump. Air pumps in particular will fully inflate it in less than a minute.

Another feature that caught us by surprise it how Elegear implemented a system to balance both sides of the pad.

Often, the air chambers inside the pad are shaped in such a way that the air can move freely from one side to the other, which can cause one corner to bulge or lift up if one of the users is heavier than the other. This was definitely not the case with this sleeping pad, and it remained flat on the floor, no matter how or where we moved.

Finally, the Elegear Double Sleeping Pad features two deflating valves, allowing it to be quickly emptied of air for easy storage. Again, we loved how easy it was to roll the pad back up and get back in the bag.

Most pads of this size would require some time, but with this one it was close to effortless.

# Comfort

At 4โ€ thick, a good 10 centimeters of thickness, we found the Elegear Double Sleeping Pad to be extremely comfortable. Weโ€™ve tested it on a variety of surfaces, such as stone and wooden floors, grass and inside tents. No matter where, we could never feel the surface beneath us, and it even held its shape when we laid down on our sides or we were propped up on our elbows.

As far as insulation goes, however, the pad doesnโ€™t have much at all, which restricts its usage to warm weather.

# Best Use

Considering how easy it is to both deploy and store, the Elegear Double Sleeping Pad is suitable for any type of outdoor excursion.

It makes for a great choice to bring to a camping ground, although we donโ€™t see it as the best option for campers intending on covering large distances on foot. This is mainly due to the weight and bulk of the pad, and because the size would require an equally large tent, which would in turn be too heavy to carry for long. Also, as we mentioned before, the lack of a high R-value also means that the use of this sleeping pad is restricted to warm weather. โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

Another activity for which we would absolutely recommend the Elegear Double Sleeping Pad is for road-trips. You could just chuck in the back of your car or van, and not worry about the size and weight. The ability to quickly inflate the pad would also allow you to set up your sleeping area without waisting too much time.

In addition to being a great item to bring on your outdoor adventures, this pad is also a perfect option to keep at home for when you have guests staying over. Compared to a classic inflatable mattress, it occupies much less storage space and does not require a pump to be inflated, while still being just as comfortable.

# Pros & Cons

+ The built-in foot pump is extremely efficient

+ The dual valves make it a breeze to deflate

+ Solid, rugged construction

+ Large, can easily fit two adults

+ Very comfortable

+ Does not bulge on either side

+ The pad is thick and does not flatten under weight

- A little heavy

- Bulky

- No insulation

- At 90$ it can be considered a little pricy, although still in line with the competition

# Should You Get One?

Whether or not the Elegear Double Sleeping Pad is for you really depends on what you intend to do with it.

  • If youโ€™re looking for your next expedition sleeping pad, something that can accompany you on all your adventures in the Great Outdoors, then no, this is not for you. The bulk, weight and size of this sleeping pad, plus the lack of insulation, make it ill suited for treks over long distances.

  • What this sleeping pad is really built for is camping grounds, sleepovers at home and to accompany you on your road trips around the World. If that sounds like something for you, then youโ€™ll want the Elegear Double Sleeping Pad as part of your gear!

So, does the Elegear Double Sleeping Pad have a place with your camping gear? Or is it better left at home?

Safe travels and happy trails!
